Philadelphia Mayor John Street is looking into how the construction of new large casinos may impact the city. The plan is to create massive casinos that will include between 3,000 and 5,000 new slot machines. Foxwoods Resort Casino, one of the largest casinos in the world, has a whopping 7,400 slot machines. The taxes expected to come in from these new super casinos will bring down property tax as well as income tax in Pennsylvania.
Some opponents are calling for a steaming of the large casinos. They feel that smaller casinos with fewer slots machines will be better and more suited for the downtown core. "Everyone wants the benefits of casinos, but no one wants them in their backyard," said one official. The feeling is that there will be a significant community opposition to mega casinos.
One proposal is to integrate the slots machines into the entertainment complexes that already exist downtown and to spread them out more and not have so many concentrated in one area. "It would be a great thing to have smaller casinos buried in mixed-use developments." The worry is that with so many cars coming into the downtown core of the cities so players can visit the mega casinos it will cause congestion and be a nuisance to residents of the downtown area.
