Online betting revenues for the year 2005 will top US $10 billion, the well-known marketing journal eMarketer reports. Stimulated by a huge growth in the popularity of online poker, as well as extensive broadband and television coverage, online betting is moving "into the mainstream." Moreover, the journal says, this figure is only the house cut of online casino revenues, indicating that it would not be unlikely for the overall figure to exceed US $200 billion.
The eMarketer report shows that 20 to 30 million US internet users visited online casinos in the month of February alone, which corresponds to over 15 percent of all US internet users. "US consumer spending on online betting is roughly 20 times the amount spent on digital music downloads," the report noted. In Europe, Germany heads the list of online casino users in terms of raw numbers, but France and Sweden crown the list percentage-wise.
Online betting is considered to be illegal in the United States, a fact that obviously does not stop millions of internet users from visiting online casinos on a regular basis. As the report states, "As long as there is betting, there will be online betting, and whether it is legal or not (in the USA) is irrelevant."
