A media website recently surveyed Americans regarding their thoughts on the online casino industry; and the answers may shock you. The US has still not changed the 1961 Wire Act, which under today's definition makes the running of an online casino on US grounds illegal. It is surprising then that over 67% of those surveyed said that they believe that the US should legalize online casinos. In addition, 33.7% stated that they would not personally play at an online casino, but that they believe that the USA should have the ability to compete with the foreign market.
Considering that approximately 60% of all online casino players come from the US it does not seem logical that the country wants to outsource the industry. It is estimated that for 2005 the online gambling market will bring in a total of $10 billion dollars, with a 50% increase for the 2006 fiscal year. Since 60 Minutes aired in November the online casino has become a hot topic of conversation and is becoming more main-stream with every passing day.
It seems that American's would feel more secure playing at a US-based online casino as they would be regulated under considerably strict US laws. Lessening the chance of underage gambling and cheating by the industry. A mere 3.4% of those surveyed said that they would rather play at an International casino, for unspecified reasons. With such a huge industry, that is not slowing its pace, it seems a waste to let tax dollars go out to other countries. If the US is a land of the people, shouldn’t the people have a say in what is legalized?
